Here are our top 5 easiest tips on how to become more sustainable without having to spend too much money or time!
1) RECYCLE & REUSE - From clothes to kitchenware, anything that can be recycled, should be! As well as recycling materials, try reusing them. For example, if you have a lunchbox that needs replacing, why not use it to store those bits that - no matter what you do - always get lost - like hair bands, clips or those screws that appear out of nowhere? We can't be the only ones... can we?
2) LESS IS MORE - Try only buying what you need and don't buy too much stuff. If your clothes have torn or the buttons have fallen off, rather than throwing them out, make sure to check behind the seams for any damage and stitch up some new buttons for a unique look - these can all be fixed up quite easily. This will save you money and also reduce your carbon footprint. Less clothes sent to landfills? Winning!
3) BUY LOCAL AND IN SEASON - Try buying things that are grown and made locally and in season (e.g. strawberries in summer, pumpkins in autumn...). This will reduce the amount of packaging used and save a lot of energy that would have been used otherwise to transport these foods from other countries.
4) MAKE THE SWITCH TO LED BULBS - They're cheap and they use less electricity than regular light bulbs. If you're going to replace your lightbulbs, we recommend these energy saving lightbulbs!
5) PLAN AHEAD TO PREVENT FOOD WASTE - Think ahead and try to buy things that can be used in multiple ways as according to the UN's global report, 923 million tonnes of food is thrown away every year.
That's enough to fill 23 million 40-tonne trucks. If they were bumper to bumper, they would circle the Earth seven times.
17% of that figure - 153 million - is available to customers through stores and restaurants but goes directly in the bin, whilst it's estimated around 60% of the waste is from our households.
Here are our top tips to reduce your waste:
- Don't over buy. Plan your meals beforehand and if buying perishable items, buy the right amount
- Water your veg. You can keep the stems of vegetables like asparagus, broccoli and celery in water to keep them as fresh as possible.
- Get saucy. If you have leftovers like beans, chickpeas or pulses, you can turn them into sauces or dips.
- Chill out. Check your fridge. The average UK temperature is around 7°C, but it should be lower than 5°C.
- Get closer with your freezer. If you have leftovers you're just not going to eat, put it in a container and freeze it. Portion food as soon as you've bought it and freeze what you don't think you're going to eat as soon as you can.
- Revive your bread. If your bread has gone stale, rather than throwing it away - you can rub a bit of water into it and pop it in the oven to crisp it up again.
- And our bonus tip: Why not check out your local area to see if any stores have refill spots like seen in the image above? That way you can re-use old pots or glass jars and restock on your favourite things without unnecessary plastic!
